Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to kayak in an area that had a couple of mangroves, which were, protected Sanctuaries by the National Audubon Society. These Mangroves were covered by many different species of birds. All seemed to be living in harmony and nesting. There were nests upon nests with birds flying in and out carrying twigs to build or strengthen the nest as well as bringing food to the youngsters. I was surprised how large some of these youngsters were when the parent flew back they began to chirp wildly and they didn't care if it was a fish or a twig they demanded their share. In many cases these young birds were the same size as their parents. It was so great to see the maternal and paternal instincts of these birds as they provided for, protected and nurtured their offspring.
Mangroves provide valuable functions in Florida waters one of which is being the roosting site for many species of birds. They act as a filtration system for our water, buffer shorelines from storms and provide basic food resources to marine life. When you look across the water it seems as though these mangroves are tiny islands jetting out of the water, until I started to kayak a year ago I believed this was the case. Mangroves are tropical plants that can grow in wet soils, salt water and can live when submerged under water with fluctuating tides. In Florida we have 3 major types of Mangroves: Red, Black and White. I don’t know the difference but do know that once while kayaking against a strong current I was swept into one, struck it with my paddle and was amazed at the red color just under the bark. They are full of all kinds of life and contribute to the ecosystem of our state.

Day 98 - Moose Hitch
My drive to enter this 365 Day Photo Challenge was to look for beauty every day. This was truly a unique and interesting item. Walking through the parking lot at Sam's Club I noticed this Moose Head trailer hitch. It was weathered, textures worn from wear and tear and a very interestingly beautiful object. Never have I seen a hitch cover so clever and creative.
Day 97- Bird Herd
It was an exciting Sunday morning to view this herd of American White Ibis looking for food in my front yard. They casually strolled from my yard to the neighbors yard looking for bugs to eat. It was such amazing site the dogs even watched in amazement without a single bark.

Day 96 - Flowers
This is one of the frames where I missed the bee but the photo was too pretty not to share. Really feels like Spring.
Day 95 - Bee
Working with the zoom feature on my camera I got the opportunity to try out the macro feature. Not as easy as it seems. Must have taken half a dozen shots to get this one. The bee would leave as I pressed the shutter and I missed him. It was an exciting discovery when I found this one actually captured the little creature.
Day 89 -White Bird
I was practically stalking this bird trying to get the perfect shot. New camera and had a difficult time trying to work the zoom. It was so frustrating but this beautiful creature just stood and waited for me to get the shot. Then I got a little too close and greedy for more so he took flight. I got that shot too.
Day 87 - Shadows
I love the lines, and shadows in this photo. Such a relaxing and beautiful a place to explore.
Day 86 - Conch in Sea Grass
There were so many beautiful sites while kayaking today. One of my favorites is the site of conch shells on the sea grass. I can't help but stop and look. The water was clear as glass, calm and temperatures in the high 70's. It was a perfect day out on the water.
Day 85 - Draw Bridge
I never get tired of watching a draw bridge. In today's high technology the draw bridge is a link to the past. Times were slow, people waited and didn't really think about it. A great chance to stop and look around at the beautiful water and boats. Many have tried to get rid of this bridge and install a new one that would be high enough for boats to pass under but those who live here love this little piece of the past that forces us to slow down and enjoy the scenery.
Day 83 - Day On The Bay
Ready for a day on the bay and the first day of my healthy journey. Lunch included carrots, Fiber One Bar, Apple and Water. Great exercise, great beauty and hopefully healthy me!
Day 81 - Coming and Going
Busy day at the beach. People coming and going. Shot this as I sat in traffic on Gulf Drive and thought it clearly represented the moment.
